Xiang Cheng

Xiang Cheng, MD, PhD, FACC, FESC, is a cardiovascular physician-scientist and Professor of Medicine at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). He currently serves as Secretary of the Party Committee for the Department of Cardiology, Director of Cardiology, and Deputy Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. He also directs the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory for Biological Targeted Therapy and the Hubei Engineering Research Center for Cardiovascular Immune Diagnosis and Therapy. He is a Changjiang Distinguished Professor (2017) and a recipient of China’s National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2015).

 

Dr. Cheng’s clinical expertise centers on coronary artery disease, including percutaneous coronary intervention, structural heart intervention, and the management of dyslipidemia. His research focuses on the immunopathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, spanning atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and aortic aneurysms. His group has made influential contributions to understanding T-cell and myeloid cell-mediated mechanisms of cardiac injury and remodeling, translating basic immunology toward therapeutic strategies. He has led major national programs, including a national “Four Major Chronic Diseases 2030” initiative, a National Key R&D Program subproject, and multiple National Natural Science Foundation grants, totaling more than 40 funded projects across basic, translational, and clinical domains.

 

Dr. Cheng has published extensively as corresponding author in leading journals such as Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal and PNAS, with more than 70 SCI-indexed papers. He is also a contributor to multiple national textbooks and holds eight national invention patents. His scholarly leadership includes service as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Cardiovascular Diseases, and editorial board memberships for Chinese Medical Journal (English Edition), JACC: Asia, Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, Current Medical Science, and other cardiovascular journals.

 

He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology, and holds senior roles in national professional societies, including Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Cardiology and Chair of the Cardiovascular Immunology Committee of the Chinese Society of Immunology. He has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Shulan Medical Youth Award, the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress First Prize (twice), the Hubei May Day Labor Medal, and the “Role Model of Jingchu” award for outstanding contributions to public health.

 

Dr. Cheng earned his medical degree and PhD from Tongji Medical College, HUST and completed postdoctoral training as a visiting scholar at Harvard Medical School.
